About
Lejja Iron Smelting Site is one of the oldest known iron-smelting locations in the world. It is an archaeological and cultural heritage site located in the Lejja community near Nsukka in Enugu State, Nigeria. The site contains hundreds of large iron-smelting slag blocks and remnants of ancient furnaces dating back to around 2000 BC, making it one of the earliest evidences of iron metallurgy in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The site sits in the traditional village square known as Otobo Ugwu Dunoka, where over 800 cylindrical slag blocks weighing between about 34–57 kg are arranged in distinctive formations. These are remnants of ancient smelting pits where iron ore was processed using early furnace technology. Beyond its scientific importance, the area also functions as a traditional shrine and community meeting square for the Lejja people, giving it strong cultural and spiritual significance.
