About

Iva Valley is a historic valley and former coal-mining area located in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria. The site is known for the Iva Valley Coal Mine, one of the earliest coal mines in Nigeria. It was opened by the British colonial government in 1917, making it the second coal mine in Enugu after the Udi Mine.
The valley became a major center for coal mining that powered railways and industries during the colonial era. It is historically famous for the 1949 Enugu Colliery Massacre, when 21 striking miners were shot by colonial police during a protest for better working conditions.
Today, the area is mostly abandoned and preserved as a historical/tourism site, with remnants of mining tunnels, equipment, and old structures that reflect Nigeria’s industrial past.
